Pre-Christmas Update

No Comments   Posted by admin |  Category:development, Milestones, Talking

Rachel’s transitioned from an infant to a toddler.  She’s not really even toddling now, running is beginning to take shape.  We were playing chase with Sam the other day and she decided to join in the fun.  She’s also perfecting her run away techniques.  Luckily, she’s still working on curbs so she mostly stays on sidewalks.

Her personality is beginning to emerge as well.  The babbling is becoming words.  She can say everyone’s names, even though “mommy” took the longest.  Her favorite is to put her finger up to her mouth and go shhhh, no idea where that came from.  We’re still working on “up” and food words so she gets frustrated pretty easily.  When she does, she really lets you know it.  The tantrums range from crocodile tears to full blown fall on the ground crying and stomping her feet.  But then she will make up for it with the best hugs and lots of kisses.  I have a feeling she’s training up to be a drama queen.

Sam’s not excluded from her moods either.  Usually they play really well together and Rachel always wants to go into her brother’s room and see what’s going on but they are beginning to fight over the same toys.  We have plenty of toys that are age appropriate for Rachel but she won’t have anything to do with them.  She just wants to be a big girl and do what her brother is doing.  As much as she wants to play Hungry Hungry Hippos, she still puts the perfect choking-sized balls into her mouth.  Speaking of choking, Rachel really wants to eat like a big girl as well.  She really wants to drink from open cups and use utensils.  The other day, she used a spoon to get most of her yogurt to her mouth but the rest ended up in her hair, oh well.

The Christmas tree is up and she’s been surprisingly gentle with everything.  Mostly she just points to the ornaments and coos.  Her favorite mischief seems to be to pull down the stockings along with the five pound stocking hangers.  Luckily, no toddlers or others have been hurt yet.  I wonder what she’ll think of the presents when they come out.  We’re going to bake cookies pretty soon so I’m sure she’ll want to “help.”

Here’s some pictures of the little girl from Halloween and the Pumpkin Patch.

9th and 10th month

I am a slacker and missed posting about her 9th and 10th month.  Actually, we’ve been really busy enjoying the end of the summer, which means we’ve been running around and not at home quite as much.

Rachel has been quite busy growing and learning.  She has learned to crawl fast, climb, and get into everything; pull up; free stand; give up bottles; clap;  point; sign more and all done and play peekaboo.  Her hair is long enough that I can get it into a pigtail here and there (she hates it) and her last growth spurt seems to have been entirely in her feet.  She went from not being able to wear her shoes because they were all too big to not being able to wear three pairs because they were all too small.

She has even started to done some beginning talking, which seems to involve milk (“mah”), dog (“dahg”), Sadie (“adie”), “pretty”, and all done (“ah da”).  We’re just starting to decipher all of it, and she doesn’t do it consistently yet.  She’s getting close and she gets really happy when we seem to figure out what she’s trying to say.  She’s a really good mimic (she copied Sam and I saying “Cock a Doodle, Doo”), so it is hard to tell what is her talking and her mimicking us.

Rae and I went with my mom to my cousins wedding in Wisconsin.  She was an awesome traveler and charmed everyone.  We all had a great time and she finally got to wear one of the beautiful party dresses that Nai Nai has been picking up for her.

At daycare, Rae has been having a lot of fun with the older kids.  Now that she is crawling and climbing, she gets to join them on the concourse and the play equipment out there.  Sadly, the big kids are transitioning out soon, so she will be the oldest.  Hopefully, she will transition into the tots room soon so she can have her big kids to play with again.

I don’t know if it is because she’s a second kid, but she really loves to play with older kids, especially Sam.  If he’s on the floor, she wants to be involved in what he’s doing.  I will often come into a room and find them giggling about something that I clearly don’t get.  She’s toughening up around him, too and will take her lumps (and dish them out).

We’ll have to cover her 11th month and her first birthday soon!  It is exciting and a little bitter sweet.

Finally, here’s some videos to catch you guys up

5 months old

Rae turned 5 months old at the beginning of March.  She grabs anything in her reach and puts it in her mouth.  She even tried to grab the camera when I took her 5 month pictures. She’s turning into a fun, happy baby that loves to explore her world.  The video is of her laughing, which is maybe one of the cutest things in the world.

In past couple of weeks, Rae had a huge developmental leap!  She learned to hold her own bottle, move around in her exersaucer, sit while propped up with a toy, started solid food, got her first and second teeth, and will stand if you hold just one of her hands.  She’s also starting to discover her feet and legs.  She’s really close to rolling onto her tummy from her back and now can really control her roll from her tummy to her back.  Just today, she reached for and successfully grabbed a toy in front of her while she was on her tummy.

Rae and Sam are starting to play together, particularly when she’s in her exersaucer.  The other night he was ringing a bell and giggling and had Rae giggling along with him.  Between her desire to play with her brother, her need to touch everything she sees, and the huge developmental leaps, it seems that we will have a very busy little girl on our hands in no time!

The Phoenix Post

No Comments   Posted by admin |  Category:Home, Milestones, stats, video

We seem to have had everything that could go wrong with the web site go wrong lately.  In a month and a half, has been hacked, had its domain registration get lost, and now had its hosting server go down with data loss.   Luckily, we had a backup of the site after the hacking (so maybe that was a good thing in retrospect) but we still lost about 5 posts.  Anyway, here’s the catchup post (thanks to a cached version from Google, whew).

4 Months

Sorry it has been a while since we updated – we had some problems with the website host.  That’s all fixed now and lots has been happening since we last updated.

First here’s some cute pictures with Rachel and Sam.  Rachel is wearing the gift we got from my office.

Rachel has really discovered her hands and that they are useful for things like taking out her pacifier, looking at it and putting it back in her mouth.  Sometimes it goes back in upside down (and she likes it that way!).  She has even started transferring toys between her hands.

Rachel also turned 4 months old.  She weighed in at 14 lbs, 13 oz and gained an inch in length in two months.  She is now almost 26″ long.  I wasn’t able to get all of my usual pictures because she was a little cranky that day, so here’s a bonus one of us outside on a sunny day.  Her face is becoming very expressive. :D

16 weeks

Yes, it has been that long, our little girl isn’t so little anymore.  We are having her sleep in her own room now and so far, so good.  It’s really nice to be able to read in bed again and not worry about waking up the little one if I have to adjust the sheets.  She’s also turning into her giggly and chatty self again.  We are enjoying the good times for now, teeth are coming soon no doubt.

Rachel’s definitely coming into her own personality now.  She’s turning into a little flirt when you talk to her.  There’s lots of babbling and smiles and if you don’t pay enough attention to her, she will squeal until she gets your attention.  We’re still sleep challenged and she won’t sleep for more than 4 hours at night but at least there are moments like these.

First Chrstmas, Sledding, and Three Months

Rachel’s had a busy few weeks.  She had her first Christmas, including a pretty Christmas dress.  Mostly, she loved having everyone around – she’s totally a people person.

After everyone got better from being sick at Christmas, we took Sam and Rae sledding.  She mostly just stayed in the Ergo carrier, very bundled up, or in the car taking pictures with mom.

And in the new year, Rae turned 3 months old and is starting to laugh!  She is definitely very different than Sam.  She goes to sleep on her own now and is starting to use her hands to self soothe.  She still doesn’t enjoy tummy time (and isn’t rolling yet), but we’ve discovered that milk irritates her reflux, so mom has eliminated that from her diet.  She seems to have started into the drooly, pre-teething stage and is quite good at blowing bubbles. She got a Bumbo for Christmas, and that has vastly improved meal times.  Now she can watch us eat (and interject her opinion on the topic of conversation, too) instead of staring at the ceiling.  We’ve got lots of nicknames for her – Rachel, Rae, Roo, Rachel Roo, and Bubbles.  We’ll see which one sticks.
