Spring Time

We took a day trip up to the local tulip festival on a particularly sunny and somewhat warm day.  Of course we had to bring the camera!

You can see how well Rae is sitting and what a happy baby she is.  Once we figured out that her second ear infection didn’t go away fully and got her on another antibiotic, she started sleeping all night without eating.  She has a bit of a habit of waking up around 3 or 4 (usually because she poops or her diaper leaked), so she’s not sleeping fully through the night just yet, but we’re getting so much more sleep!

She has really taken to daycare.  She loves to play with the toys, loves going on buggy rides, sleeps ok there, and loves the teachers.  She’s still scared of strangers, so when the parents of the kids walk in she gets upset.  We’re sure that this will also pass in time.

Dinner with Rae is getting interesting and fun.  She loves to chat while we’re eating.  She lets you know if you aren’t feeding her fast enough and when she’s done eating, she loves to play what we call “The Gravity Game.”  We keep toys at the table for her to play with, but usually she just drops them off the table by her chair.  The best part? She takes turn dropping them for Mommy and Daddy and stares at whoever’s turn it is until they pick up the toy.

We’ve introduced broccoli since the great grean bean disaster (she won’t even eat them if I hide them in carrots!) and that was a huge hit.  We’re starting to let her experiment with self feeding chunks of soft food.  We gave her banana today and she managed to get a few pieces in her mouth, but mostly she just wanted me to put them in her mouth for her.

Rae is on the verge of becoming a mobile baby.  She’s learned that if she chains her rolls (back to tummy, tummy to back, etc.) she can get to things she wants.  She’s spending a lot more time on her tummy these days, and seems to enjoy playing with toys and rotates in circles while on her stomach.  Just this afternoon, while playing on her tummy, she was lifting her stomach and bottom off the ground and balancing on her toes with straight legs.  Once she gets those knees bent, I don’t know how long we’ll be able to keep her from crawling off after Sam.

Smiles and Frowns

Today Rachel completed her second week at daycare.  She’s taking to it like a duck to water.  The first few days were a bit tough and she cried the 2nd Monday as well but now she’s loving life there.  Apparently she really enjoys the buggy rides with the other babies and going to see the aquarium.  She’s also a big hit with Sam’s friends, who come over to her room and ask to see her.  She’s smiling at everyone and having a ball playing with all the new toys, an easel type toy with a mirror is her current fav.

Of course, all of that could be due to us drugging her up with Motrin all night.  She’s got about 4 teeth coming through right now so that’s a bit rough.

We tried to feed her some green beans last night and tonight.  The reaction was taste, taste again, and then frown.  Taste some more just to make sure it’s the same and then start a coughing fit to get it out of he mouth.  If we try to give her more, she turns her head and pretends to play with the chair or her finger or imaginary yummy food.  We have a few more jars of the stuff that we’ll mix with lots of applesauce, then we’re done with green beans.  This is the first thing she hasn’t liked yet.  Carrots, peas, sweet potatoes, bananas, avocado, apples, and spinach have all been approved so far.

Six Months!

Rachel took her first plane ride in March. She was a great baby on the plane. She slept most of the plane ride and was all smiles otherwise. She was also a great baby to have with us on vacation. She napped happily in the Ergo when either Mommy or Daddy was wearing her and she slept pretty well in the the hotel rooms. Hopefully she will be this good for our trip down to LA in May.

Shortly after we got back, Rachel turned 6 months old. I’d say she has officially entered the “Happy Baby” phase. She has three levels of smiles, depending on how happy she is. There is a regular smile, a smile with a wrinkled nose, and a smile with a wrinkled nose and her tongue sticking out. I am trying to get pictures of all three, but they are hard to catch on camera. Overall her 6 months photos were hard to get. She loved the pickle though. :) Good thing we have professional portraits scheduled.

Skills wise, she hasn’t really mastered anything new. She will stand up at a table and play if you put her up there, but she can’t get down without falling so we have to watch her. She is almost sitting entirely on her own and only falls when she gets startled. She still gets tired when she sits for too long, but is figuring out how to lower her self to the ground instead of falling down. She’s sitting well enough that we moved her to the high chair for meals. She has also learned to control her rolls from both her back to her tummy and her tummy to her back. She doesn’t do much rolling, unless it is to get off her tummy, but we know she can do it. We even have video proof!

She will be getting plenty of tummy time soon enough. Rachel transitioned into daycare and started going three days a week on Monday. The first couple of days of transition were rough, but by Friday, she was smiling and having some fun. When Monday rolled around, Daddy was able to drop her off with no problems. On Tuesday, she even let the teachers put her down to play a few times. Her naps and eating schedules are a little off still, but those will even out. There is an active little boy about a month older than her and a very relaxed little girl that is about a month younger than Rae. We’re excited to see if she decides to be friends with either of these two.

Sunday was Easter, of course. We took Rachel to the Bunny Bounce at the Zoo and posed her for pictures on her blanket with some eggs and her Easter basket. She was in a great mood, so I actually got some good pictures this time. On Easter morning, she was greeted with a basket of candy and a new toy. We let her have one Peep to play with. She only ate about one bite of it, but it was fun to watch.
